Program Philosophy:

Prairie Psychological Services, Inc. is about self-empowerment. It is about helping you, help yourself change an alcohol or other addicted behavior. The basis of our philosophy is "No single treatment approach is appropriate for all individuals."

Our treatment approach is based on the idea that our thoughts and/or beliefs cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations, and events. The benefit of this fact is that we can change the way we think to feel / act better even if the situation does not change.

Our treatment approach has a specific agenda for each session. The specific techniques / concepts taught during each session focus on the client's goals. We do not tell our clients what their goals "should" be, or what they "should" tolerate. We are directive in the sense that we show our clients how to think and behave in ways to obtain what they want. Therefore, we do not tell our clients what to do -- rather, we teach our clients how to do.

Utilizing the Disease Concept of Alcoholism/Chemical Dependency and the Cognitive/Behavioral Model, PPS, Inc. encourages additional outside support such as AA/NA Meetings, Sponsorship, Church, family support, etc. to assist individuals in building/utilizing a strong, ongoing sober support network.

The length of treatment is based on individual needs on an ongoing basis and can range from six to ten weeks.

Upon successful completion of IOP, clients are immediately referred to a structured aftercare program for continued ongoing support.

Admission Criteria:

PPS Inc. utilizes the ASAM-PPC-2 to determine the most appropriate level of care for all potential clients prior to admission into our program.

The substance abuse field has made substantial progress over the past decade in developing a formal structure that systematically organizes commonly used treatment interventions. In an ongoing effort to establish national standards for defining (1) a continuum of substance abuse prevention, treatment, and rehabilitative services; and (2) a set of admission, continuing care, and discharge criteria for each level of service intensity, ASAM, with nationwide input from treatment professionals and others, has been developing Patient Placement Criteria for the Treatment of Substance-Related Disorders. The second edition of this publication, referred to as ASAM PPC-2, was published in 1996 (ASAM, 1996).

The criteria in ASAM PPC-2 are the most widely used and comprehensive national guidelines for placement, continued stay, and discharge of patients with alcohol and other drug problems. ASAM PPC-2 specifies five levels of treatment service including intensive outpatient treatment.
